Alberto Santos Dumont: Inspiration For Innovation
Alberto Santos Dumont was an aviation pioneer, entrepreneur and innovator. He was born on July 20th 1873 and he died on July 23rd 1932 in Brazil. At the age of 18 he was sent to France to study engineering and soon he became fascinated by flight. He started his engineering career by designing balloons and dirigibles, but his greatest achievements were recorded when he turned his attention to heavier than air aircraft.
On October 23rd 1906 he became the first person to fly a heavier than air machine in Europe called the “14-Bis” and the first person in the world to demonstrate a self- launching take off, with non-detachable landing gear. The Wright Brothers used a catapult and had no landing gear attached to their aircraft so there lies a distinct difference between the two remarkable feats. Alberto Santos Dumont dedicated all his life to aviation and was known for his innovative approach.
